- Approach under control. Use the lowest speed that maintains steerage and account for the stronger of wind or current.
- Secure the controlling line. Pass the line that prevents the boat from escaping or being driven into danger. Depending on conditions, this may be a spring, bow, or stern line.
- Add bow and stern control. Bring the boat parallel without using crew members' hands or feet to push against the dock.
- Set both spring lines. Adjust them to stop excessive forward-and-aft movement.
- Center the boat and fenders. Confirm the hull cannot reach the dock, pilings, or neighboring vessels through the expected range of motion.
- Recheck every line. Account for wake, tide, weather, passenger movement, and the time the boat will remain unattended.
How to Tie a Cleat Hitch
Lead the working line around the base of the cleat, take a full turn as needed to control the load, then cross over the top in a figure-eight pattern. Finish with an underhand loop that locks against the final crossover. The finished hitch should lie neatly, remain easy to inspect, and be releasable without a pile of extra wraps.
Do not bury multiple lines beneath one another on a cleat if that would prevent a boat from departing.
