Why Fender Size Matters More Than Most Boaters Realize
An undersized fender can look perfectly adequate while the boat is resting in calm water. The problem appears when a wake, wind gust, or current drives the vessel toward the dock. A fender that is too small compresses completely on impact. Once it bottoms out, there is no cushioning left, and the hull can strike the dock through the flattened fender.
A fender that is much too large will protect the boat, but it may be awkward to store, handle, and deploy. Getting the size right is not complicated. It requires understanding diameter and length, then matching those measurements to the vessel, docking environment, and expected conditions.
Boat Weight and Docking Conditions Change the Equation
Two boats of the same length may need different fenders. A lightweight center console and a full-displacement trawler can both measure 35 feet, but the heavier trawler carries substantially more momentum as it approaches the dock. More displacement means more energy must be absorbed, which usually calls for greater diameter, additional fenders, or both.
The slip matters just as much as the boat. A protected floating dock in a calm basin creates relatively predictable contact. An exposed fuel dock, concrete seawall, tidal river, or fixed dock subject to wake action creates larger and less predictable loads. Do not size only for the calmest day at your home marina. Choose equipment that can handle the conditions you realistically encounter while traveling, fueling, rafting, and waiting for bridges or locks.
Hull shape also determines whether a fender remains in position. A pronounced flare can push a short cylindrical fender downward, while a hard chine or integrated rub rail may encourage a round fender to roll away from the contact point. Diameter determines how much space and compressible material sits between the hull and dock. As a general rule, allow approximately 1 inch of fender diameter for every 4 to 5 feet of boat length. A 25-foot boat needs at least a 5- to 6-inch-diameter fender, while a 40-foot boat typically needs at least 8 to 9 inches.
Boat length is only a starting point. A heavy-displacement cruiser places more force on a fender than a light boat of equal length. Exposed slips, tidal current, rough water, and hard fixed docks also justify moving up a size. When choosing between two suitable diameters, size up. A slightly oversized fender protects better than an undersized one.
Length Determines Contact Area
A longer fender spreads contact over a greater section of the hull. This is especially important on boats with substantial freeboard, flared topsides, or changing dock heights. How Many Fenders Do You Need?
Carry at least one fender for every 10 feet of boat length. A 30-foot boat should have a minimum of three available. Four is better because the extra fender can protect the bow, stern, or an unexpected contact point while maneuvering.
The dock determines placement. In a slip with pilings, position a fender at every likely piling contact point. When rafting beside another vessel, distribute fenders along the entire contact side and use larger diameters because both boats may move. Always carry one more than your planned minimum.
