Boat Fender Placement Guide: Where and How to Hang Fenders

The right fender in the wrong position cannot protect your hull. Learn how to identify contact points and rig fenders for docks, pilings, locks, tides, and neighboring boats.

Boat fender placement is not about hanging matching cylinders at equal intervals. Fenders protect only where they remain between the hull and a hazard. Dock height, tide, freeboard, hull flare, wind, current, and the shape of the structure all change that contact point. A simple placement plan prevents the last-minute scramble that leads to gelcoat scuffs and crushed hands.

What Boat Fenders Actually Do

A fender creates compressible space between the boat and a dock, piling, lock wall, or another vessel. It absorbs part of the impact and spreads the remaining load across a larger hull area. It is not a substitute for a controlled approach or correctly adjusted dock lines. The best protection combines slow boat handling, proper fender size, accurate placement, and lines that limit movement.

The Three Primary Fender Positions

For ordinary alongside docking, begin with at least three fenders on the dock side. Add more for longer boats, heavier displacement, rough water, or an unfamiliar dock.

  • Forward quarter: protects the area likely to touch first during an angled approach.
  • Amidships: covers the widest beam and often becomes the main pivot or pressure point.
  • Aft quarter: protects the stern section as the boat straightens alongside or backs into position.

These are starting positions, not fixed rules. Watch the geometry as the boat approaches. Move a fender to the actual point of contact rather than preserving even spacing. Keep a roving fender ready for a bow, stern corner, protruding piling, or unexpected wind shift.

How High Should Boat Fenders Hang?

Set the widest part of each fender at the expected impact height. Along a typical floating dock, a vertical cylindrical fender often works best with its lower section near the waterline and its body covering the dock edge. The top eye should not define the height; the protective body must sit where hull and dock can meet.

Test placement under light pressure before tying the boat permanently. If the fender pops upward, rolls under the dock, or is squeezed below a rub rail, change its height or orientation. Tie fender lines to secure rails, lifeline bases, or dedicated fittings that can support the expected load without damaging finishes.

Vertical vs. Horizontal Fender Placement

When to Hang Fenders Vertically

Vertical placement is the standard choice against a continuous dock face. It covers changing contact heights as the boat rocks and is fast to deploy during an approach. Two-eye cylindrical fenders can hang from either end, while center-rope models can be secured with a line passing through the center.

When Horizontal Placement Works Better

Horizontal fenders protect a longer section against pilings, low docks, lock walls, rafting partners, and some flared hulls. Secure both ends so the fender cannot rotate away. Ball fenders can provide greater stand-off distance at a concentrated contact point, while flat or specialty fenders may stay put where cylinders tend to roll.

Fender Placement for Different Docking Situations

Floating Docks

The dock rises and falls with the boat, so vertical fenders at the forward quarter, beam, and aft quarter are usually effective. Check for low edges that could ride beneath the fender or high rub rails that create a second contact point.

Fixed Docks and Tidal Water

The boat moves vertically while the dock does not. Use longer fenders, horizontal placement, or dock-mounted protection capable of covering the expected tidal range. Recheck both fenders and dock lines as water level changes; a perfect setup at high tide may leave the hull exposed—or lines dangerously tight—at low tide.

Pilings

A narrow piling can slip between widely spaced fenders. Place a fender directly at each likely piling contact point or rig a horizontal fender that spans the gap. In a permanent slip, piling cushions or a fender board may provide more reliable coverage.

Rafting with Another Boat

Bow-In, Stern-In, and Fuel-Dock Placement

In a bow-in slip, protect the forward quarters and any point where the bow can swing toward a finger pier. For stern-in docking, cover both aft quarters and watch swim platforms, outboards, drives, and boarding gates. A transom or specialty fender may be appropriate, but never place loose lines where they can reach a propeller.

At a fuel dock, rig before the final approach and confirm which side will be used. Position the amidships fender first because it often supports the initial controlled contact, then protect the forward and aft quarters. Avoid dragging dirty fenders across the topsides as crew members relocate them.

  • Deploying fenders after the approach is already underway
  • Hanging every fender at the same height without checking contact points
  • Using too few fenders or leaving large unprotected gaps
  • Allowing cylinders to roll above or below the dock edge
  • Tying to weak hardware or leaving fender lines too loose
  • Failing to adjust for tide, wake, passenger loading, or wind
  • Letting someone place a hand or foot between the hull and dock

Dirt, salt crystals, and grit trapped between a bare fender and hull can act like abrasive compound as the boat moves.
